My new animated short feature, debuting on Youtube.
This music video was made by me to a local band called Moço Velho. Soon, it will hit MTV Brazil. Enjoy!
I was invited to be part of a kind of virtual exposition on Amalgamated Artists website. The Bestiary project, which features some conceptual monsters how they´re conceived by some emergent talents from webcomics new scenario. I was honored to be a part of it and be among high talented guys like Gary Epting, Rob Berry, Paul Housley, Gabe Ostley, the twins Bob and Paul Timony and Sam Little. So I said YES!!
Since the beginning I knew that it was an almost imposible task to create an original monster. I accepted this challenge and, after some weak tryouts, I came with a theme which I found interesting. A girl and a man. She sits there, holding her feelings enigmatically while the man sits at her side, or what left of him: his severed head. Who knows what happened here? Who knows who´s the monster in this frame? I think it´s a deep question to ask, to defy the public. So I went along with this idea.
The whole process (pencils, ink and coloring) took three working days. The steps I show below till the final result. Don´t forget to visit the website and check out the other artists work. It´s worth speding some time there!!

Step 1 - Drawing the scene - a simple task except for trying to translate what was stored in my mind to paper.

Step 2 - The whole inking was made in Illustrator CS2, after scanning the image. It took about a half hour to finish it.

Step 3 - Here I applied some basic colors to the final composition. I´ve imported the vector drawing into Photoshop CS2 as a smart object and tried experimenting with some colors palettes. In fact, everything was pictured into my mind so it was an easy step.

Step 4 - After stablishing the basic palette, I tried using a red solid blending with the original image. It got a different and interesting result, so I went futher with it.

Step 5 - I started then to apply some weight to the illustration, adding some shadows and light. I must confess that I´m not so academic about this stuff, so I tried to figure out the mood of the scene illuminating it adequately. I don´t know it I was successful.

Step 6 - To add a dramatic touch, I´ve made some light filtered through some windows. It kinda felt like a 40´s noir movie, so I kept this new element to the inexistent scenario.

Step 7 - To finish the work, I brought up the filter I applied in step 4. It kinda suggests the heaviness of this theme while keeping it old fashioned. The final result got very very satisfactory.
Conterraneos is a magazine edited by Banco do Nordeste (something along Northwestern Bank), a bank in Brazil whose goal is trying to develope the region in which I live in.
They asked me to make two illustrations for an article about people who live in hostels … the wars and conflicts which move these hostels. So I made it, that was my first assignment for Banco do Nordeste.
Enjoy.
There is a man on the Crossroads. He hunts for sport. They call him The Prize Hunter.

Well, thanks for Claude Bornel for the wonderful article talking about my work. It´s a shame it is in Portuguese, but I think many people here in Brazil will know more about this strange artist called Alexandre Vidal. Some shockings revelations are made here (for example, who is the mysterious Falex?), so clink on the link below to check it out.
Yeah, that´s why I was taking so long to update things up here. Sorry. The last few months I´ve been quite busy, since December 2007. That´s why The Passenger is a bit slow. But the next chapters (five whole chapters) are already scripted, and I can´t wait to get back to the working desk.
Well, this music video is for a local band called Moço Velho (you would call them Old Boy, maybe). It´s a music video about a monkey who evolves becoming a human being. The song is about love, and it´s called Jaz Aqui (It Rests in Peace Here or something along that).
Below you have some images from the music video, which is finished. But it´ll be only available for everybody on Youtube next week. There´ll be a huge party celebrating this music video here in my city, so I´m gonna give further details in the weeks ahead.
Just to let you know that The Passenger joined the bunch from Amalgamated Artists, a website made by Gary Epting (thanks for the inviting, Gary!). Some early competitors from Zuda also joined this website, just like Gabe Ostley, Sam Little, Mighel Sanchez and David Daneman. Go check it out. Every new episode will be featured there.
